Plants and plant extracts have been used by cultures for millenia for healing purposes. Humans are meant to consume hundreds of plant species throughout the year since greater plant diversity adds to greater resiliency and health. The addition of essential oils into your self care routine can be a source of this diversity. Essential oils are known to benefit detoxification, metabolism, sleep, stress reduction, brain and organ function, relaxation, improve mood, calm inflammation, boost the immune system and more. The easiest and best way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils is through simply breathing them in through your nose. When you inhale essential oils, the molecules stimulate olfactory receptors in your nasal cavity that carry information to your brain. This is one reason that essential oils are so effective. There are very few substances that can penetrate our blood-brain barrier - for protective reasons - they must be extremely small and fat soluble. In fact it is one reason why scientists struggle to formulate pharmaceuticals that can affect the brain and therefore offer any help to healing the brain. Besides brain health, essential oils can dramatically improve many bodily functions, help overcome fatigued systems, balance hormone production, stimulate cognition, improve energy and therefore improve overall well being and health.
If you have ever contemplated or wondered about the use of essential oils and thought it was too complicated or expensive - never fear - with essential oils less is more - meaning - start with a few basic ones that are suited for the ailment you would like to work on and simply breath them in- straight out of the bottle or dampened onto a cotton ball or handkerchief that you can put in your bra or shirt pocket, or by your bedside table. It is that easy. Other methods that are simple are - rubbing them onto the bottom of your feet or on pulse points such as wrists or even on ears.
One simple way that I incorporated them for my whole family to enjoy, was by collecting pine cones in our yard and spraying them with a blend of cinnamon, clove, ginger, eucalyptus, frankincense and cedarwood. I chose all of these for their healing, calming and yet energizing properties. I made a spray bottle with a few drops of each, a small amount of MCT oil (b/c it stays liquid at room temperature) and water, and as the scent starts to fade, I top them up.
I loved this idea, because it not only allowed me to make something from nature that my family could benefit from, but it also prompted me to collect pine cones from my (Georgia) yard rather than buying the ones in the store that are heavily scented with a cinnamon fragrance that is made from something other than (I'm sure) essential oils (with benefits) and would cause my husband much grief to see I’d spent $$ on PINE CONES!!!
