Today I started a simple and natural liver detox that I will do for the next 7 days. Our liver does so much for us. It is the powerhouse behind our metabolism, it is what determines whether we can burn our body fat for fuel, it regulates our hormones, safeguard us against toxins, it is our storehouse of nutrients, vitamins and minerals and produces glutathione - our most powerful antioxidant, plus so much more.
This week I will be eliminating caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, body lotions, perfumes, corn, cow dairy, soy and wheat products, any superfluous supplements and even cutting back on strenuous workouts. Epsom salt baths and dry brushing will also be high on my list. All of this helps our liver to have a break from the overload we may be putting on it during our daily routine and diet.
In turn, I will be sure that I am including foods rich in phytonutrients, lean proteins, resistant starch and fiber. All of these foods give the liver the nutrients it needs to do its job of detoxification. Foods such as wild rice, quinoa, legumes, seeds, nuts, grass fed meats and wild caught fish, kale, cabbage, broccoli, watercress, berries. apples, bananas. I always try to eat organic when I can, but during a detox it is particularly important to try your best here to lessen that load. I will concentrate on lots of purified water/ mineral water is good too, and fresh smoothies that pack in the nutrients but are easily digested and absorbed. Additional ingredients that help with detoxification are spirulina, chlorella and dandelion root. Our liver’s detoxification process is 2 steps, and we have to be sure we are giving it the proper nutrients so that each of these is done at that correct rate.
Our livers give us beautiful clear skin, bright eyes, energy to get us through the whole day regardless of our calorie intake (when working as it should) and so much more. It is also associated with anxiety, fear and depression when not at its best.
Did you know that your liver cells regenerate? Up to 80 % of your liver can regrow if damaged. Isn’t that great news? Yes, because your liver filters your blood from all over your body before it returns to the heart - it does this once every minute!
So if you have been feeling less than the 100% you like to feel everyday, maybe it’s time to give your liver some deserved TLC. A small break from toxins and plenty of nourishment to completely heal and get back on track.
