Boosting your health by spending time outdoors: Grounding

As simple as walking through your yard barefoot or taking your shoes off at the park

Part 4,

Grounding, a little known but important concept

Grounding, or earthing, is a practice of connecting your body to the earth, and thereby to the earth’s electrical energy.  By doing this, we experience an exchange of ions. Studies show that soaking up electrons can:

  • lower inflammation

  • ease stress

  • promote natural antioxidants

  • improve wound healing

  • improve sleep.

Because most of us have less contact with the earth’s surface than our ancestors did, present day people tend to build up positive static electric charge, which cannot be released unless we connect to the ground.  Grounding neutralizes these positive charges by absorbing negative electrons to balance us out!  Also, when this exchange occurs, we actually change the composition or viscosity of our blood. Our red blood cells can become clumped together as they flow through our body, creating something like a traffic jam.  After a few minutes of being in contact with the earth our cells separate, creating space around each cell which allows more oxygen exposure to the cells and makes our blood flow more easily.  More oxygen to our blood cells is crucial for carrying nutrients throughout the body, and more oxygen to the cells allows a greater chance of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in our mitochondria - which is THE source of energy. Healthy oxygen supply is crucial for brain function, energy production and much more.  Oxygen and ATP production cannot be overstated for our well-being. Red light therapy, which has become so popular,  gives many of the same benefits, but grounding is free! Standing, sitting or lying for as little as seven minutes makes a difference, but I suspect you’ll be happy to stay longer!
